Last Monday, Cuba stated at the United Nations that in order to achieve a culture of peace, it is necessary to provide every possible assistance to education, respect for human rights and social and economic development. The Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Pedro Nunez Mosquera, emphasized the importance of respect for the history, characteristics, culture and religion of each nation, as well as the need to promote tolerance, mutual understanding and solidarity. The diplomat spoke at the plenary session of the General Assembly, during which the topic “Culture of Peace” was discussed and a draft resolution was considered declaring July 18 as the day of Nelson Mandela. Pedro Núñez Mosquera appealed to all those present to refrain from any action that implies discrimination, prejudice, the use of defamation of religion, racial profiling and stereotypes against equality, human dignity and justice. The Cuban diplomat also called for measures and commitments to remove barriers preventing peoples from exercising their rights to self-determination and promoting environmental sustainability. He noted that multilateralism and dialogue are the only means of combating unilateralism and neoliberal globalization by which the southern states are kept at an underdeveloped level and their culture is controlled. Mosquera said the time has come to abolish the international order, which is based on the use of economic forces, technology and military forces against weak states. What kind of world culture can we talk about if more and more new military bases are opened in different states. The Cuban gave the example of the United States of America, which agreed to establish military bases with one of the Latin American countries. Mosquera believes that this was done to intimidate his enemies.
