Last Tuesday in the Brazilian capital, the XI regional conference on women in Latin America and the Caribbean began, the purpose of which is to consider gender equality and problems of women. Cuba became one of the vice-presidents. Brazil acted as president, the delegations of Argentina, Antigua, Costa Rica, Barbados, Ecuador, Cuba, Spain, El Salvador, Panama, Jamaica, Peru, Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Uruguay were elected vice presidents. The Mexican delegation made a presentation. The delegation of Cuba was headed by the President of the Federation of Cuban Women Yolanda Ferrer.
During the opening ceremony of the congress, Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim said that the authorities bear full responsibility for the improper implementation of state policies to improve the status of women in modern society and their active participation in the economic, political and social life of the country. Recall that back in 1995, the IV World Conference on the Status of Women was held in the Chinese capital. It was established that the strategic goal of the development of the international community is the observance of gender equality and the creation of democratic states. A special adviser to gender issues and improve the situation of women in the United Nations Rachel Mayanja said that it is impossible to build a democratic state if a woman is excluded from social life. In the Latin American region, gender violence has become a real disaster. Alicia Barsen, who is the executive secretary of the economic commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, noted that in recent years the situation has improved, but there are still a lot of unresolved gender issues.
