The National Republican Party Sinn Fein won the elections to the Northern Ireland Assembly (local parliament) for the first time in history.
According to the results of the vote count, representatives of the party won at least 27 of the 90 seats, the BBC reported. Sinn Fein stands for the reunification of Ireland.
Party leader Michelle O’Neill called the results of the vote decisive for Northern Ireland.
Another 24 seats were won by the Democratic Unionist Party, which supports the preservation of Northern Ireland as part of the UK. In the last convocation, the party had 27 seats.
The Liberal Alliance Party won 17 seats. The Ulster Unionist Party, also in favour of remaining in the UK, has nine seats. Seven more seats went to the Social Democrats.
At the moment, 88 out of 90 seats in Parliament have been allocated.
Sinn Fein was established in 1905 and operates in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Representatives of the party are accused of having links with militants of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), but Sinn Fein denies this
